One week into the new semester, IBG (Inter Block Games) was back! For all the freshies, this was a glimpse of things to come in major sports events such as IFG (Inter Faculty Games) and IHG (Inter Hall Games, which is arguably the most important sports competition around in NUS).
IBG 2007 was really the place to be at during the first two weeks of the academic year 2007/2008. All the excitement, energy and vigour that were flowing through the veins of our fellow KEVIIANS was second to none. You just had to be present there to understand what I really mean!!
Since the past three years, E Block had clearly demonstrated its supremacy among the five blocks in King Edward VII Hall by being champion of every IBG. Unfortunately, this year, E Blockers could not keep up with the high standards set by their predecessors for the reason, as some said, that most of their best sportsmen have already graduated. Hence, it was no surprise to see GH Block being crowned IBG 2007 champion with six finals won. E Block was, however, not far behind in second place winning in four events.
On a retrospective note, we can say that IBG 2007 was a real success in that it managed to strengthen the bond between all the freshies. They had the opportunity to interact with each other well especially in team sports like soccer, handball, basketball and volleyball where much team effort is needed. The freshies bonded really well and managed to pull out some stunning moves in sports like soccer and handball! Yes, some freshies were even better than the seniors! Keep it up freshies! We hope to see you all for the forthcoming IHG (Inter Hall Games).
A quick chat with all the respective block heads only highlights the fact that IBG is considered as more of an exercise to let the freshies interact with each other. Below are some excerpts from the conversation with our dear block heads:-
Before IBG began, which block did you think would win it and why?
Vincent Lim [AB]: I thought it would either be E or GH Block because E Block has got quite a lot of seniors and GH Block has smaller number of seniors but they are almost on the same level as E Block.
Chong Ming En [E]: I knew GH had a better chance because they recruited more sportsmen but I didn’t think they will win it though!
Ooi Hui Ann [GH]: I always believed GH stood a strong chance to win IBG. We have the sports talents, determination, competitiveness and the will to succeed in whatever we do. But of course, other blocks proved to be strong competitors as well.
Are you satisfied with your block’s performance?
Chia Jia Yan [CD]: It was awesome. I’m very satisfied. Everyone played to the best of his/her abilities and there was good team fun! Next year we’ll surely do better!
Lim Aik Leong [F]: We were very unlucky with 5 runner-up spots! If only we came in 1st place for some of the 2nd places we won, then we would have achieved a better rank.
When quizzed on the number of blockers who came down to support their respective blocks, almost all the block heads agreed that there definitely were enough people who came down and the atmosphere and cheering was excellent.
IBG was a success and we hope that the high spirit level shown in this year’s IBG continues right into IHG! Get ready for the biggest sports event in NUS!
